Car Door Window Replacement on a Jaguar F-Type

We were called out to a Jaguar F-Type with a smashed car door window. The glass had gone completely, and a lot of it had dropped down inside the door. We replaced the door glass on the driveway, so the car did not need to go anywhere. Here is how the job went, with photos from the day.

Where All the Glass Goes

Car door windows are made from toughened glass, which breaks into small cubes rather than big shards. Some of it lands on the seat and in the footwell, but a lot of it falls straight down inside the door. You cannot see it from outside. If it is left there, it rattles every time you shut the door and can catch on the new window as it winds down.

Taking the Door Apart

To reach the glass, the door trim has to come off. On the F-Type that means unclipping the trim panel and disconnecting the wiring for the switches, which opens up the inside of the door. With it all apart, we could hoover out the glass that had collected at the bottom of the door, as well as the pieces in the cabin.

Fitting the New Window

The F-Type has frameless doors, so there is no metal frame around the window. The glass seals straight against the roof, which means it has to sit in exactly the right place, or you end up with wind noise and leaks. Once the new door glass was in, we checked it wound up and down smoothly and closed tight against the roof seal, then put the door back together.

The Finished Job

Clean new glass, the door back together and nothing left rattling around inside. The car was ready to drive as soon as we finished, without the owner having to take it to a garage.

Not Driving an F-Type?

The job is much the same on most cars and vans: clear out the broken glass, strip the door, fit the new window and check it works properly. Our car door glass replacement page explains more about how we fit the new window.
