Does Your Windscreen Need Replacing?
Not every chip means a new screen. These are the signs that a repair will not do the job safely, and the glass needs replacing.
The chip has grown into a crack
Once a long crack has spread from the chip, resin cannot hold it together any more. Cracks grow with every cold morning, pothole and slammed door, so the glass needs replacing before the crack reaches your view.
Damage over 10 mm in front of the driver
The strip of glass in front of the steering wheel has the strictest MOT limit, and anything over 10 mm there fails and needs a new screen. Chips up to 10 mm in that strip can be repaired, though a faint mark may stay in your view.
A chip close to the edge
The glass round the edge of a windscreen is under more strain than the middle. Damage within a few centimetres of the edge tends to spread quickly, and a repair there rarely lasts.
Smashed, holed or scratched glass
A heavy stone, a falling branch or a break in can leave glass that is beyond repair. So can the arcs that worn wiper blades scratch across the screen, which catch the glare of low sun and headlights.

How We Replace Your Windscreen
Here is how a windscreen replacement goes, from checking your reg to handing the car back. You are welcome to watch while we work and ask as many questions as you like.

We match the glass to your reg
Before we set off, your registration tells us which screen your car left the factory with, down to the sensor, heating, tint band and acoustic layer. Some models were sold with more than one, and then a photo of the glass round your mirror tells us which you have. We bring that screen, at the fixed price we gave you.

Wipers and trims off
We take off the wiper arms, the panel beneath them, the trims round the glass and the mirror, and unplug the rain sensor or the heating if your car has them.

The old screen comes out
We cut the old screen free of its bond and lift it out without marking the paintwork.

We prepare the frame
The old adhesive is trimmed back to a thin, even layer and the frame is cleaned. Any bare metal gets primer, because a strong, watertight bond starts here.

The new screen goes in
A fresh bead of urethane goes round the frame, then we lower the new glass in with suction lifters, line it up and press it home. Tape holds it steady while the adhesive grips.

We refit, tidy up and hand back
Trims, wipers, mirror and rain sensor go back on, we clean up any broken glass and take the old screen away. Then we tell you when it is safe to drive.

The Right Windscreen for Your Exact Car
Two cars that look the same can need very different screens. We check your registration so the new glass works just like the old one did.
Rain and light sensors
If your wipers and headlights come on by themselves, there is a sensor behind the mirror. We fit a screen with the right mounting and refit the sensor, so the automatic wipers carry on working.
Heated windscreens
Some cars have fine heating wires in the glass that clear frost far faster than the blowers can. We fit the heated version and plug it back in.
Acoustic glass
Many newer cars have a thin sound deadening layer in the windscreen to keep road and wind noise down. If yours had one, the new screen has one too.
Head up displays
If your speed shows up on the glass, the screen needs a special layer so the display stays sharp instead of showing double. We order the right version for your car.
Tint bands and solar glass
A shade band across the top, or a coating that keeps the cabin cooler, is matched to the original so the new screen does not stand out from the rest of the glass.
Glass built to the same standard
We fit manufacturer glass, or equivalent glass made to the same safety standards, so the new screen is every bit as safe as the one it replaces.
On the day
How Long It Takes and When You Can Drive
Most windscreens take around an hour to fit, from the first trim coming off to the last one going back on. Bigger screens and cars with a lot of trim round the glass can take a little longer.
After that, the adhesive needs time to set before the car is safe to drive. How long depends on the adhesive and the weather, so we give you the exact drive away time for your car before we leave.
Looking after your new windscreen
- Leave the retaining tape on for as long as we tell you to
- Close the doors gently for the first day or two
- If you can, leave a window open a crack for the first day, so shutting the doors does not push against the fresh bond
- Skip the car wash and the pressure washer for a couple of days
- Ring us if anything does not look or sound right. You will speak to the people who fitted it.
Rain on the day?
The new bond needs a dry frame, so heavy rain can stop us fitting outdoors. If the forecast turns, we will ring to move your slot or find somewhere under cover, such as a garage or a covered car park.

We can fit your screen in an office or site car park. Tell us where the car will be parked when you book, and we will come to it while you work.

Windscreen Replacement Questions
How much does a windscreen replacement cost?
It depends on your car and on what is built into the glass, such as a rain sensor, heating or a head up display. Send us your registration and postcode and we will ring back with a fixed price for your screen.
Can you replace my windscreen the same day?
Often, yes, when we have the right screen in stock and a free slot. If your screen has to be ordered in, we will tell you when it is due to arrive and book you in for the first slot after that.
Will my rain sensor and heated screen still work?
Yes. We order the screen that matches your registration, with the right mounting for the sensor and the heating built in if your car had it. We refit the sensor and plug the heating back in before we hand the car back.
Is it illegal to drive with a cracked windscreen?
It can be. Driving with damage that blocks your clear view of the road can lead to a fine and penalty points, and a crack in front of the driver can fail the MOT. A crack also weakens the glass, which matters in a crash, so it is safest to have it replaced soon.
Do you need to take my car away?
No. We fit the new screen where the car is parked, whether that is your drive, the road outside your house or a car park at work. All we need is enough space to open both front doors wide and to work round the front of the car.
Will my new windscreen leak?
It should not. Leaks nearly always come from poor preparation, which is why we trim, clean and prime the frame properly before the new screen goes in. Every fitting is also covered by our 7 year workmanship warranty.
