Car Door Glass Replacement, Fitted at Your Door

Know your glass

Which Door Glass Does Your Car Have?

A front door window, a rear one and the glass in a frameless coupe door are all different parts, and side windows are not all made the same way. This is what we look at before ordering yours.

Front door windows

The window beside the driver or front passenger. It slides up and down in rubber channels and is bolted to the lifting mechanism inside the door, which is why the door panel has to come off to change it.

Rear door windows

Many rear door windows only drop part of the way, and on SUVs, estates and people carriers they are often privacy tinted. If the small fixed glass panel beside the window is the piece that broke, that is a vent or a quarter glass, covered further down.

Frameless doors

On coupes, convertibles and some saloons, the door glass stands on its own with nothing above it. The window dips slightly each time the door opens, then rises into the seal as it shuts, and the new glass is adjusted until it does that cleanly.

Laminated side glass

Most side windows are toughened and burst into small pieces. Some cars have laminated side glass instead, which cracks but holds together like a windscreen. It still needs replacing, and we check which kind your car has before we order.

Only just found the window broken? Our guide covers the first steps, from reporting a break in to covering the gap until the new glass goes in.

Step by step

How We Replace a Car Door Window

A side window is fitted from inside the door, so most of the work happens with the door panel off.

  1. We check the reg and the door

Your reg usually points us to the glass your car was built with, and we ask which door it is. Some models came with more than one kind of side glass, tinted or clear, toughened or laminated, so we may ask a question or two before we order.

  2. The door panel comes off

We unclip the trim panel, unplug the window and mirror switches and peel back the plastic sheet behind it. Older clips can be brittle, so the panel is eased off slowly.

  3. Broken glass out of the door

Much of the broken window ends up in the bottom of the door. We vacuum it out, along with the pieces caught in the rubber channels, as glass left in there rattles over bumps and can scratch or jam the new window.

  4. Fitting the new window

The glass is lowered into the door, guided into its channels and bolted to the lifting mechanism, then lined up so it rises straight and meets the top of the frame evenly.

  5. Tested with the panel still off

We run the window up and down several times. Many cars with one touch windows lose that setting once the switch has been unplugged, so we set it up again. On a frameless door, we also check the glass seals as the door shuts.

  6. Panel back on, car cleaned up

The plastic sheet is sealed back in place to keep water running down inside the door from reaching the car, the panel clips back on, and we vacuum the seats, footwells and door pockets.

Quarter and vent glass

Replacing Quarter and Vent Glass

A quarter glass is the small side window behind the doors: in the rear pillar of many hatchbacks, estates and SUVs, behind the front door on some three door cars, and beside the rear seats on a convertible. A vent glass is the small fixed glass panel built into the front or back of a door window.

These pieces are often made for one model only, so they are not always on the shelf, especially for an older car, and we track down a brand new one for your model first. Depending on the car, it is then bonded in like a windscreen, set in a rubber seal or fitted with part of the door taken apart. If yours is bonded, we tell you how long to leave the car before you drive it.

What helps us find the right piece

  • Which side of the car it is on, and whether it sits in a door or behind one
  • Whether the glass is tinted, and whether any lines run across it, as some quarter windows carry the radio aerial
  • The markings printed in one corner of the old glass, if a piece of it is still in the frame

An older car?

Quarter glass for models that are no longer made can take longer to track down. We tell you when it should arrive before we book you in.

A convertible?

The rear side windows on a convertible drop down with the roof. We line the new glass up with the door window, so the two meet and seal against the hood when the roof is up.

Before we arrive

What to Expect on the Day

A door window takes about an hour once we arrive, and that includes clearing the broken glass out of the door and the car.

Door glass is held by its channels and the lifting mechanism, not glued in, so there is no adhesive to wait for. You can drive the car as soon as we have finished.

Until we get there

  • Leave the window switch alone, as running the motor with broken glass in the door can jam the mechanism
  • Park with room to open the broken door all the way, because we work standing beside it with the panel off
  • Empty the door pocket and the seat next to the broken window, which lets us start the clear up straight away

Opens onto a busy road?

We work beside the open door for most of the job. If that side of the car faces traffic, tell us when you book and we will work out the safest way to do it.

A child seat by the window?

Glass collects under and behind child seats. If you can take the seat out before we arrive, we can hoover the seat beneath it properly.

Fantastically accommodating, very kind, and very efficient. I'd highly recommend Prime Windscreens to anybody, especially as it was quite stressful after someone broke into my car.

Cosmin was absolutely fantastic. I required replacement for rear quarter glass for an old Toyota Auris. I contacted Cosmin on Wednesday. He was able to source the glass and install the new glass on the next day. He even arrived early for the installation! The service was fantastic and the price very reasonable. An all round top bloke who I would highly recommend and would certainly contact again for any other glass repairs/replacements.

FAQs

Door Glass Replacement Questions

My window has dropped into the door but the glass is not broken. Can you fix it?

That is usually the window regulator or its motor, the mechanism that lifts the glass, rather than the glass itself. We replace broken glass only, so for a window that has dropped or stopped working, a garage or an auto electrician is the place to go.

Will you need to take the whole door apart?

No. Only the trim panel on the inside of the door comes off, with the plastic sheet behind it. The outside of the door, the paintwork and the lock are left alone, and the panel clips back on once the new window has been tested.

Why would a side window shatter when nobody has touched it?

It is not common, but the edges are the weak point of toughened glass, and on a door window they are hidden inside the door. A small chip on the edge from an earlier knock can give way when the door is shut hard or on a frosty morning, and the whole window goes at once.

What if I hear wind noise after the new window is fitted?

Ring us. Door glass that sits a fraction out of line can whistle at motorway speeds, most often on frameless doors, and it is put right by adjusting the glass rather than replacing it. The fitting is covered by our 7 year workmanship warranty.

Can you fit darker glass in the front doors?

No. The law says the front side windows must let at least 70% of the light through, which is why factory privacy glass stops at the rear doors. A new front window is made to the same standard as the one it replaces.

Besides side windows, we replace windscreens, rear screens and van glass, and repair stone chips.
